Photo library "Marubi"
The art of photography in our country began in Shkodra in the 1950s and is associated with the name of Pietro Marubi (1834 - 1903), originally from Piacenza (Italy), who came as a political asylum seeker to Shkodra, where he settled permanently , founding the photographic studio "Marubi", in the center of the city, the first of its kind in Albania. His over forty years of work as a photographer has left an important mark, with historical and artistic value.
In the "Marubi" studio, the student of the Italian master, Mati Kodheli, also had his modest contribution. From 1885, Matia's brother Kel Kodheli (1870 - 1940) also worked in this studio. After the master's death, he inherited the studio and started working independently, then bearing the surname "Marubi" out of respect and gratitude for the generous teacher. as its own adjective.
In addition to the increase in public demands, the activity of the "Marubi" studio also increases, following step by step the evolutionary techniques of photography and standing out for high quality until the realization of true artistic photography.
The third generation of the "Marubi" dynasty, after the death of Keli, is represented by his son, Gega, who passed on this treasure and further enriched it, working with the same dedication and professionalism until the end of his life his.
In 1970, the fund of the "Marubi" photo gallery, the fruit of a hundred or so years of continuous work, where the art and memory of Shkodra and our nation are merged together, which includes about 200,000 negatives on glass plates and celluloid. passed to the Albanian state. Then, four more negative archives with outstanding values were added to this fund, by prominent Shkodra photographers, respectively Shan Pici, Rraboshta, Dedë Jakova and Angjelin Nënshati, almost doubling the number of negatives in this Photo Gallery. It is worth noting that each of these photographers had created their own profile of the artist photographer.
The funds of over 400,000 negatives, in addition to the long span of time, have a geographical extension beyond the borders of the city and district of Shkodra. In addition to thousands and thousands of individuals who are citizens or not of Shkodra, hundreds of local and national historical events, daily chronicles of the city, well-known public figures and personalities from various fields of political, economic, social and cultural life have been fixed there.
Urban planning and monuments of the city of Shkodra and most of the cities of Albania and Montenegro have also been documented. A special value is taken by thousands of negatives that reflect traditional clothing, which include all the ethnographic areas of Northern Albania, the characteristic houses of Shkodra and those of the village, the Great Market of Shkodra, natural landscapes up to those of the Northern Alps, etc.
There is a significant number of negatives for consuls accredited in Shkodra and foreign political and military personalities of foreign countries, as well as thousands of soldiers and officers, from Turkey, Italy, Austria-Hungary, France, Britain, Montenegro, etc., especially from the period of World War I and II.
In addition to the negatives, the "Marubi" photo library keeps the original registers, since 1918, where the names of persons and groups - persons and the exact date of photography are accurately recorded.
